The Peterson guide was a one-man show—Roger Tory Peterson wrote it, illustrated it and saw to the updates and improvements in every new edition. (There were four more in his lifetime, and he likened the job to "serving a prison sentence.") Most of the guides that came after have been group efforts, attesting to what a huge undertaking a field guide is. The text is some of the best found in traditional field guides and includes detailed descriptions of what to look for to identify a specific bird.
